Research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in related areas (e.g. Information Systems) has progressed more or less independently over the years. Individual areas have enjoyed considerable success in the development of technologies for independent AI faculties. Due to the diversity of computational techniques employed in implementing AI systems must considerable effort sometimes be spent on the integration process. In order to overcome this problem some researchers are developing integrated a r c h i t e c t u r e s f o r knowledge-based systems (KBS) that can be used for modelling different AI capabilities in an integrated fashion.
